DALLAS (AP) — Pilots at Southwest Airlines have overwhelmingly approved a new contract that will raise their pay rates by nearly 50% by 2028, becoming the last group of pilots at the nation’s four biggest airlines to score huge raises. The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association said Monday that the agreement covering pay and other issues for about 11,000 pilots was ratified by a 93% to 7% margin. Airline labor groups – and pilots in particular – have succeeded in negotiating pay raises over the past year as most U.S. have returned to solid profitability coming out of the pandemic. The Southwest agreement followed more than three years of bargaining. The contract calls for an immediate 29.15% increase in pay rates upon ratification, followed by 4% raises in 2025, 2026, and 2027 and a 3.25% increase in 2028.

The pattern was similar across all medical specialties, including newborn care, emergency medicine, primary care, surgery, hospital care, endocrinology, mental health care, care for developmental disabilities, and palliative care, researchers said. Even after adjusting for type of health insurance, family socioeconomic position, and other health conditions, the disparities were clear. “Across multiple healthcare specialties, non-white children receive poorer care relative to white children," study coauthor Dr. Monique Jindal of the University of Illinois Chicago School of Medicine said in an email. “The impacts of housing, employment, health insurance, the criminal justice system, and immigration are impossible to disentangle and are cumulatively responsible” for the poorer care for minority children, she said.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, the UAW Local 598 said 51.8% of votes cast were against the proposed deal. The vote signals that approval of the deal, which is set to raise costs significantly for GM, is not guaranteed. Union workers are voting on contracts from each of Chrysler-owner Stellantis (STLAM.MI), General Motors and Ford Motor (F.N), after the first coordinated strike against Detroit's Big Three automakers.

Elon Musk said Starlink's now breaking even and now accounts for the "majority" of satellites in orbit. Excited to announce that @SpaceX @Starlink has achieved breakeven cash flow! Starlink is also now a majority of all active satellites and will have launched a a majority of all satellites cumulatively from Earth by next year. At the time, Starlink was losing money hand over fist, with Musk saying the main goal was "not to go bankrupt" in 2021. According to Walter Isaccson's biography of Musk, the SpaceX CEO was not comfortable with Starlink's use in armed conflict.

In 2021, Musk said SpaceX would spin off and take Starlink public once its cash flow was reasonably predictable. Starlink has been in the spotlight since last year as it helps provide Ukraine with satellite communications key to its war efforts against Russia. SpaceX is valued at about $150 billion and is one of the most valuable private companies in the world.

The tentative agreement, which would still need to be approved by union leaders and ratified by members, is patterned off a 4½-year agreement reached between the union and Ford Motor on Wednesday, sources previously told CNBC. The UAW plans to hold a meeting early Saturday afternoon with local Stellantis union leaders following the sides agreeing in principle to the terms of a deal. The tentative agreement is expected to end six weeks of targeted labor strikes by the union after the sides failed to reach new deals for 146,000 UAW members before a Sept. 14 deadline. The union called back more than 16,000 striking Ford workers after reaching a tentative deal with the automaker. It's not immediately clear how much the labor deals will increase labor costs for the companies, which had argued that giving in to all of the union's demands would affect their competitiveness and even long-term viability.

Both GM CEO Mary Barra and UAW President Shawn Fain participated in the marathon bargaining, however the union leader was doing so virtually, said two of the sources. Fain was attempting to simultaneously negotiate with GM and Chrysler parent Stellantis , which were hosting talks with the union roughly 30 minutes from one another. Spokespeople with GM, Stellantis and UAW declined to comment on specific details of the talks. The union called back striking Ford workers after reaching a tentative deal with the automaker. The strikes have collectively cost GM, Ford and Stellantis billions of dollars in lost production.
